RAG Rating a Job Description: It might help you take the leap to that dream role? Ever looked at a job description (JD) for your dream job and felt intimidated? Not sure if you have all the skills? Here is a simple visual tool to help you assess your skills against the JD and boost your confidence.

Review the JD: Carefully read all the attributes and requirements. This step is crucial to understand what the role entails and what the employer is looking for.

Rate Yourself: Use a pen to mark each attribute/requirement with:

  • G (Green): You have the skills or experience.
  • A (Amber): You have most of them and are confident it will not be an issue.
  • R (Red): You definitely do not have those skills.

Tally Your Scores: Count the number of G’s, A’s, and R’s.

What do the scores tell me?

  • If you have more R’s than G’s & A’s, it might not be the right time to apply. You probably do not have the right set of skills and could face significant challenges if you got the job. But don’t be discouraged! You now have a clear list of skills and experiences to gain, helping you become the right candidate in the future. Make a plan and start working on them.
  • If your combined G’s & A’s outnumber the R’s, why not grab the opportunity and apply for that dream job? Employers are not always looking for a perfect candidate; they want someone who can learn, develop, and deliver on the job. Give yourself the opportunity and take the chance!
